News: Is Open Source Really Insecure?

To go Open Source or go proprietary? There is a common conception that open-source is unsafe and insecure and therefore companies should rather go for proprietary solutions. They think that because software is termed "open-source", that the world can see the vulnerabilities of the software and might exploit it, and less informed people tend to think that open-source software can be modified while it is running.

How To: Make a Helmet Cam (DSLR)

I'm in the middle of a project right now that uses POV for every shot. One of these shots involves a person swinging a golf club. A normal steadi-cam doesn't work very well for this, so I thought it might be easier to just build a helmet cam. Here's how I did it:

Weekly Tips #3: Making a Build Dynamic

Sometimes, the part of architecture in minecraft that makes something really stand out is not the environment around the build, but the detail in the construction itself. More detail in a building makes that building more eye-pleasing and interesting to look at. However, even extremely detailed buildings can look plain or flat. The reason for this is the wall of it is completely 2D. To make a building really pop, make a surface 3D instead. Not only does it make it more appealing, it adds bett...

News: The Green House - Vertical Gardening Exterior Walls

This is one concept that I would love to see sweep the urban world. One thing that strikes me every time I visit a major city is how far away they are from anything that is truly alive. Not only is the air dirty, but everyone must buy their produce from the grocery store. If those trucks were to stop coming for any reason, most people, if not everyone, would die of starvation. While this house is covered with ornamental plants, I would love to see this same concept applied to edible plants an...

Camera Phone Photo Challenge: Firecracker Buried Underground

While running through a bag miscellaneous leftovers from the 4th of July, I came up upon a stash of firecrackers that had eluded me every previous time I had gone through the bag. I started setting them off and grew tired of them quite quickly, so I thought of creative ways of setting them off. I decided to bury one underground with only the fuse exposed and set it off. It blew all the dirt on top away, but for some strange reason, all the smoke stayed. I quickly pulled out my camera and took...

News: Superbowl Snackin' with Snoop

For some reason, hip hop x cooking is a familiar equation in the world of HowTo. Today's "tutorial" comes in the form of a blatant Pepsi advert with Snoop Dogg as culinary host. Sure, the Super Bowl is mere hours away, but not to worry, Snoop doesn't demand much artistry or time for whipping up his "oregano" spiked snack of choice. Just dump a bunch of pre-made condiments on a bowl of chips, and voilà, Snoop's (re: Pepsi's) eight-layer dip. Previously, Eeeverybody Love Fried Chicken, So Liste...

News: SlipKnot and Incorrect Foundation Chain Count

When I learned to crochet, I was taught that a slip knot was added to the crochet hook as a crochet technique alone. After that, you made a specific number of chains. It will depend on how the crocheter was taught and how the pattern author was taught. This is something to keep in mind as a crocheter ...
