News: A Simple Trick to Help Stabilize Your DSLR

We're about to get real here... DSLR filmmaking has made every would-be filmmaker's dreams of shooting a feature that looks as good as a 'professionally shot' Hollywood film a reality. These consumer-level cameras bring with them many advantages, but they also have their disadvantages - namely, they were never intended to be used primarily as video cameras, and so their design doesn't exactly make using them easy or comfortable (especially when you're shooting long takes). Thus, you're gonna ...

News: Special Edition Gold PS3 'Ni No Kuni' Bundle -- Another Reason to Move to Japan

Studio Ghibli is the most well known anime feature film studio in the world. For over 26 years, their films have represented the peak of mainstream anime, and since Disney began distributing their films in America back in 1997, they've become a household name here in the States—not just in Japan. In 2001, they even bested Disney and Pixar, taking home a Best Animated Feature Film Academy Award for Spirited Away. Eight years later, Ghibli and Fukuoka-based developer Level-5 announced that they...

News: Iconic Movie Posters Recreated in Neon

Pop Art by Mr Whaite is a cool tumblr featuring a series of neon film posters for popular movies. The artist says: "I love neon signs—they’re hypnotic, sexy, sleazy and tacky all at the same time—and I’ve always thought it would be cool if cinemas used them to advertise films. So with that in mind, I thought I’d have a go at designing some animated Movie Neon. My first attempt is Ghostbusters—an obvious choice really, particularly as neon featured heavily in the video for Ray Parker Jr’s sing...

News: Zoetrope + Bicycle Wheel = Cyclotrope

Kudos to student Tim Wheatley, who came up with this incredibly nifty DIY animation using a bicycle wheel, cardboard cut-outs, and wire to create a magical reinvention of the classic zoetrope, Earth's earliest form of animation (it first surfaced in China around 180 AD!). Simply give it a spin, and the animation comes to life. Inspired to make your own? First, learn the basic principles of the zoetrope here or here. Next, take a little advice from Tim to add the "cyclo" element:

News: Bionic Man - Blood on the Roof

The new and improved Bionic Man... sort of. This film was shot with a Canon 7d, Kessler Slider, and Glidecam. We used a Pentax Super Takumar 50 1.4 and Canon EF-S 18-55 for lenses. It was edited with FCP 7 and graded with Color 1.5. Thanks for watching!

News: Unconventional Edit in Mann's "Public Enemies" (DP: Dante Spinotti)

I watched Michael Mann's "Public Enemies" (DP: Dante Spinotti) last night for the first time and was struck by a very unconventional, yet effective (I think), cut. In the opening sequence (video below), Dillinger is driven up to the entrance of a prison and escorted out of the car. The scene is established in a long lens medium wide shot (probably 200mm from 150' away...Note: standard 35mm dimensions, not 2/3"). After a few steps/seconds, it cuts to a wide angle lens closeup (24-2mm from with...

News: Lasse Gjertsen

Lasse Gjertsen is a pretty cool dude. I know he's not really playing these drums so it doesnt really count, but he comes up with some really cool beats. Its really inspiring to me just to hear a beat that he creates. He is a young man from Norway, hes great with film and editing, and thats how he creates these videos. He just films himself making different noises, and then goes back through the recording compiling the sounds in different combination's to make beats. It inspires me, and I love...

News: Dr. Strangelove

Here is an interesting mini-doc about the set designer Ken Adam.  Here he discusses working on the Dr. Strangelove War Room set.  This style would influence many films to come and would become one of the most memorable graphic elements in film history.  The funniest thing about this doc is his story about Ronald Reagan who thought the War Room from Dr. Strangelove was a real place and he wanted to see it, now that is great design! Here is the very MOD movie trailer for "Dr. Strangelove"

News: Recut Movie Trailers - Horror Versions

It's often said an editor can do anything with the footage he or she is given.  The following collection of trailers proves this point.   We are all familiar with these films, some are comedies, some are family dramas, and some are animated children's movies but what unites them all here today is them being RE-CUT into full blown HORROR MOVIES.

News: DSLR to Film Comparison

So watching this I think what is so interesting is not what film does better, but what the differences are between the DSLRs.  Give me Kodak indoors and Fuji outdoors any day, but the 5D really does shine, it becomes hard to see why you should shell out for a RED, or most Sony products especially for a anything without guaranteed theatrical release.   Documentary I believe remains a whole different question and workflow is still a headache but when the name of the game is make this beautiful ...

News: Interview with Manborg Director Steven Kostanski! | the Film Lab

One of our favourite movies of 2011—Manborg, which we saw at Toronto After Dark—has become one of our favourite movies of 2012 with its week-long run here in Toronto at the Royal. A gloriously funny pastiche of ultra-cheap kung-fu, horror and sci-fi, Manborg is also a perfect example of the DIY ethic: it wears its rough, hand-made edges proudly, and its intense roughness makes its devotion to ‘80s channel-100-at-3-AM crap-cinema ephemera even funnier. We had a chance to speak with director St...

How To: Play The Card Game "Judgment"

Definition Judgment is a game where you have to predict the number of hands you'll make and try to make those number of hands that you predict. It is a game usually for 3 or more players. Even 2 players can play but then the game won't be that interesting. 5 players can play the game using one deck of 52 cards. Jokers have no role here.

News: Put Your Legs In Front Of Your Head

Whoa, these bygone era triplets are seriously flexible. "The Ross Sisters were a trio of female sibling dancers consisting of Aggie Ross, Elmira Ross, and Maggie Ross (whose real names were Vicki, Dixie and Betsy Ross). Their public attention peaked during the 1940s, during which they were featured prominently in the 1944 film Broadway Rhythm. The sole remaining known film clip shows them performing "Solid Potato Salad", which features the sisters' amazing contortionism."
