Since the final 1.8 update, players go hungry over time if they don't replenish themselves. Hunger is also determined by the level of activity, meaning the more you run about or kill monsters, the hungrier your character becomes.

These impressions are coming from a person completely new to the Final Fantasy Online world. Never played FF 11 or the FF 14 Beta. This game is not friendly to new people. I finally got around to trying out this jam jar jet project. The most successful and longest lasting pulse was somehow the only one I did not record.
