If you need to quickly silence your iPad, accessing the volume options on screen can be tedious and lengthy. You can also use the volume rocker, but if you have to press the button several times before the sound is finally muted, it can take several seconds. One of the many new features in Mac OS X Lion is the new Launchpad utility.
