Horror Photography Challenge: Guitar Ghost

I thought this one was interesting. Long exposure while zooming out. All of the bright spots from the guitar became streaking lines. Maybe not that scary but I thought it was an interesting technique with an interesting result. Probably would have worked a lot better in a better location! My classroom isn't that interesting.

How To: Carve Polyhedral Pumpkins

Halloween is coming up, so many of you may have a need or desire to carve a pumpkin and turn it into a Jack O' Lantern. This week we are going to explore carving our pumpkins into interesting geometric shapes. In this post, we will carve the pumpkins into spherical versions of polyhedra, and in Thursday's post we will carve 2 dimensional stars and some simple fractal designs into the pumpkins.

How To: Recover WinRAR and Zip Passwords

Archiving and compression is a great way to store and prepare files for sending. You can reduce the size of a file, turn a group of files into a single file, and even encrypt and password the contents! Just take a look at this image to see how much it compressed a 28GB text file.

News: Build Your Own Van De Graaff Generator

I know, I know, I've already posted one of these. Sorry, but this one's cooler than the last, so I had to put it up. This also has a great in-depth tutorial that shows exactly what to do and why you do it. There are photos for every step of the process, so you can actually make this one without too much head scratching.

News: Green Tea For Weight Loss And Cleansing

I'm sure a lot of you like to find inspirational stories of people who by adding something to their diet lost weight or bettered their health. I know I love to search stories like that because it helps me see if I'm doing everything I can to be healthy and happy. It helps me stay motivated if I'm doing everything I should and it helps me tweak my diet if needed to get on the right track. Once in a while I experience one of those for myself, and I love to share those successes with everyone, h...

Oatmeal: Creative Ways To Consume Besides For B-Fast

Many people consume oatmeal for breakfast since it fills you, is a very healthy option (better than a certain egg sandwich you can get at fast food restaurants) and can be very delicious if you put the right stuff in it. What many people don't know, though, is that you can incorporate oatmeal in other areas of your meals and are very delicious ideas, take my word for it.

How To: Make The Perfect Red Mexican Rice

I grew up eating for the most party delicious Mexican food, so naturally, once in a while I will cook some of that comfort food to remember the best days ever ( being raised by my lovely mom who I love to death). My mom is the best cook ever, and I would love to one day be as great as a cook as she is, but I know that will take lots of time and practice.

Community Byte: Hack Our IRC Bot to Issue Commands

Last week's Community Byte we got off to a great start! We had a few people build our IRC bot, and all went well. We had some great contributers, ideas, and people willing to learn. So, needless to say, we will be having another. Let's try to get a few more people involved this time!

How To: Reverse Check a Phone Number

Prank Calls, Masked NumbersWho is calling your phone or your child's? Pranksters use a lot of tricks to make sure they can get on your nerves. Being able to trace prank calls is important because you're not going to learn much from your Caller ID, since most prank callers use an unlisted number - such as, a cell phone number. Many also use special code *67 to mask the number so your Caller ID will show "Blocked Number" or "Private Number". There are a lot of mild cases of so-called phone bull...

News: Vibrant Color Photography Challenge: Yellow

Oooh. Since I already eliminated myself, I can just fill up the corkboard. Ok. I really won't do that. But I had to share this one. I think this is my favorite abstract light painting. This was taken in Las Vegas. I think this was using lights from one of the hotels in the Mandalay bay complex. 15 second exposure I think.

How To: Customize Your Business Cards

When we speak of business cards, the first thing that comes into our minds is a white piece of paper with contact information. This is the traditional design – it’s safe and you can never go wrong. But in these contemporary days, the key to getting the market is by grabbing attention. So why settle for safe? Make custom business cards and start getting noticed.

News: Google+ Pro Tips Weekly Round Up: Google+ Breaks News

Increasingly, I'm turning to Google+ as a source of news, and it looks like I'm not the only one. On Thursday, news of a small earthquake broke on both Twitter and Google+. One curious user, +Keith Barrett, decided to try and find out which social network was faster with the news. Turns out it was a tie. As Google integrates Google+ more closely with the rest of its services, and more users post relevant stories, I think we'll start to see Google+ as a place that can create and break stories,...

Scrabble Challenge #12: Can You Unscramble the Derivative Words?

Last week's challenge brought up a good question (thanks Lisa) regarding the functionality of the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary, 4th Edition, both online and in print form. The word TACTICAL was the answer to the first puzzle in that challenge, but when you search for the word directly in the print version, it can't be found. Likewise, when you search the online dictionary on Hasbro's site, you won't find it either. Go ahead, try it. You won't find it looking for TACTICAL specifically.

News: Thrifty and Chic - PVC Pipe Mirror Frames

This is very similar to the PVC picture frame, but it's interesting enough to post it as well. I like circley [sic] patterns, and this little idea fits into that beautifully. This one also contains a better how-to than the picture frame article, so if you liked that concept but found her instructions a little hard to follow, this one is right up your alley.

News: Math Craft Inspiration of the Week: The Kinetic Wave Sculptures of Reuben Margolin

Reuben Margolin builds large scale kinetic sculptures based off of mechanical waves. Some of his sculptures contain hundreds of pulleys all working in harmony with each other to create sinusoidal waves and their resulting interference patterns. He designs them all on paper and does all of the complicated trigonometric calculations by hand. Everything is mechanical; there are no electronic controllers.
