News: May feels like November

A November release week in May It used to be that games marked to be blockbusters (expected to sell more than a million in their first month) would always be released during the holiday September to December season. November was always the month companies chose to release their best game. This release model worked fine until the last few years, when too many games were being released in November and companies started to see diminishing returns on their titles because of the release rush.

Silver & Gold: DIY Modular Origami Christmas Ornaments

After becoming addicted to basic sonobe modular origami, I decided to make ornaments for relatives as Christmas gifts. I tried using fancy paper from stores like Paper Source, and cutting it to proper origami size, but I could never get the tight folds I wanted with non-traditional, non-origami paper. I ended up using this metallic origami paper that folds beautifully, and I'm pretty happy with the tiny models I ended up with. Forgive these pictures (iPhone/Instagram), I don't have my regular...

News: Orderly Tangle Earrings

I decided I would make those earrings I alluded to in Monday's Post on orderly tangles. I had to shrink the templates down so that the triangles are about 2 cm on a side. I used 110 lb cardstock and and painted them using metallic leafing paint in gold, silver, copper, and brass. I would put up a tutorial, except I think that this project would be too frustrating for most people. All I can suggest is that you make the orderly tangle of 4 triangles multiple times and just keep shrinking the si...

News: I love when a costume comes together

I actually didn't do any sewing at all for this costume, just kind of cobbled it together for a fantasy larp I'm in. The green and gold corset was a gift, the lace shirt and brown overskirt I got from a clothing exchange, the white underskirt comes from a thrift store, and the purple wrap was given by a friend. I was going for a somewhat Renaissance Italy style with this costume, and I think it's a great example of what you can put together just by raiding your closet.

News: Weston Price Foundation

The Weston Price Foundation is the gold standard for truly good nutrition. Weston Price was a dentist practicing in the 1930s who over the course of many summers visited fourteen different native groups and correlated the health of their teeth to what they were eating. He consistently found that as long as the people ate their traditional whole foods diet, their teeth (and the rest of their bodies) were healthy. When they started eating Westernized foods their dental and overall health deteri...

News: Window into AR

This was a Chicago AR meetup we had where we introduced the concept of using a tablet to view Augmented Reality objects. We used ARSights app for this demonstration. The great thing with this is that there are 10,000's of free models & the ARSights viewer/player is free. It is as simple as downloading the viewer and then playing the file. If you want to create your own models they sell software for that.

News: Guild Wars 2 Manifesto Trailer Video

Are these guys running for politics? I'm buying whatever they are selling. Really great trailer with an overview of what Guild Wars 2 will bring new to the MMO scene. Narrated by the developers of the game, they offer some good points on what you can expect from the game when it launches early next year (date has yet to be determined, but it does not look like it will make it into the holiday period).

How To: Screenplay Format Guide (PDF)

Everyone wants to be a writer, but selling a screenplay is a tough job in Hollywood, especially if you know nothing of the industry standard screenplay format. Believe it or not, making your script stand out is actually counterintuitive— anything other than the traditional format will brand you as amateurish. Even those doing script coverage will neglect your script. To ensure your script gets a fair read, follow these formatting guidelines from Story Sense.

News: Top Gun 2 Starring Tom Cruise?

Desperate Career Move or Box Office Gold? Many of us saw the $20 million opening weekend of "Knight & Day" as a nail in Cruise's closing coffin. Others disagree. Coupeville: Mussels, Suds, & Pool

Love their mussels (they sell fresh by the pound if you want to cook your own), their homebrewed Parrot Ale, and playing pool. An institution in Coupeville. Lack of street appeal makes it easy to walk on by (good for us locals), but a don't miss recommendation from me.
