What started off as a meme, has turned into a near reality. When the E3 trailer for Battlefield 3 was released this summer, it started off with a soldier holding up a dinosaur statue. Obviously, this means that DICE (the developers) should release a DLC pack where you're fighting dinosaurs. This is the next best thing, I guess. DICE, if you're listening, I've got loads of ideas for the dinosaur DLC.
Congratulations to Bryan Kiguchi for Dreaming Little Bird, our winning shot of the Phone Snap Double Exposure Challenge!
I thought the brightness in the cat picture mixed well with the brightness of the white sand of Destin, Florida. I wished I could have cropped the picture with the cat in it so there wasn't a huge chair on the water! Tiger (the cat) was actually watching a bug fly by, witch is also in the shadow but isn't visible through the sand. I used Instagram to apply the Hefe filter to the shadow picture and BlendCam to do the double exposure part.
If you have not done so already, you should read about the 10x World Champion. The book has been out now for a couple of years now, but it's a MUST for any surfer. From his start as a grom in Cocoa Beach, FLA to his current top-of-the-world status, you'll be inspired, become pumped and perhaps jealous! From the written content to incredible photography, this is a book that you will keep forever; DON'T BEND THE PAGES & DON'T USE IT AS A COASTER! .
I am missing those times when I get to go to the fishmongers @ the beach in our home town. You get to buy the freshest and the latest catch from the local fishermen. And whats more, you get it cheaper than anywhere on the planet. Even at the lowest price you can still haggle to go lower where at some point the fishmongers would give some extra fish just so you would buy again from them.
Usually when I see people flying kites at the beach, I associate the pace to a humdrum senior citizen activity. Serene for a few initial moments, dull for the rest.
Waves are like clouds. Perpetually calming, they possess a serene beauty that never grows old. It's no wonder humans capture the planet's daily natural wonders over and over again. Armed with a camera, they just can't resist the classic postcard shot: Sunrise. Sunset. Clouds. Mountains. Beaches. Waves.
Another sweet boat this weekend (see yesterday's Zipper Motorboat), the Seabreacher X is a high-speed sub, fashioned after a man-eating shark. Built by Innespace, the submarine has a 260 horsepower engine, can speed through the water at 50 mph on the surface and 25 mph when diving, and best of all: the Seabreacher X can jump 12 feet into the air!
Artist Jim Denevan works on a massive scale. He's "painted" the northern beaches of California, and etched away at the Nevada desert.
It's the newest craze to hit the web and it's called "tarp surfing". Somehow it is out and out ingenious. Simple and infectiously fun (for some reason, the resourceful silliness of it is right on par with CD-R bubble blowing).
Tony Hawk may very well be the greatest skateboarder of all time. At age 42, the legendary Hawk can still pull off a 900. For those who don't know, a "900" refers to a 900 degree aerial spin off of a skateboard ramp. This is one of the most insane skateboarding tricks, and Hawk is one of only four (in the world) who have ever pulled it off.
This is one stylin' bicycle. Ok, I admit. I stared at the handle bars and marveled. Wow, the designer and driver of this masterpiece must have impeccable balance. You know, the "look ma no-hands type of balance". But I was wrong. The design is even more clever. Finnish designer Olli Erkkila installed a steering rod running through the frame. Venice Beach bicycle fetishists are drooling in envy as you read...
We found a great collection of reviews on Bocas Surf Lodges at NomadSurfer. Here's a brief except of their wisdom on the Jewel of the Southwest Carribbean:
Hello World! Welcome to the place wholly devoted to the local surf of Southern California. I am like many people a transplant from the East Coast. I started surfing when I moved here for college 8 years ago.
Through our friends at Azucar Surf we found this lovely surf house for sale. This house is for sale by owner Michael Lawson. This is what he has to say about it:
Though summer is almost over, that doesn't mean you should ever be lax when it comes to protecting your skin from sun overexposure. However, should you find yourself with red and burning skin after a last-minute weekend trip to the beach, listed below are 9 simple and cheap home remedies for relieving symptoms of sunburn.
Make your summer memorable by whipping up some ice-cold, homemade soda in the comfort of your own kitchen, then take it along with you during your next picnic or beach trip.
Photography is a wonderful thing. It means you won't ever leave something behind and forget about it.

If you have never heard of skim boarding, or think you can't skim board because you don't live near the beach this is for you.
Our Thrillbilly-Tricycle-Flip hero is back, and never fails to astound. Travis Pastrana is both an X-Games gold medalist and star of MTV show Nitro Circus. The daredevil kicks ass at supercross, motocross, freestyle motocross, base jumping and rally racing.
Luxiare is at it again with another clever, beautifully shot How-To. This time Luxiare demonstrates how to make the perfect packed lunch: a bento
Toy splicing is the hobby of combining to disassociated toys into a totally unique device.
Like any good video game these days, controversy is a must, and that's exactly what Homefront provides. It's a good old-fashioned, controversial hot potato—isn't that the way war always is?
Over the past 10 months the once peaceful city of Christchurch in the South Island of New Zealand has been haunted by a plethora of devastating earthquakes with hundreds of fatalities. To date there have been over 7000 earthquakes. This photo was taken on Worcester Boulevard, opposite the Christchurch Arts Centre. It was a dull, cold day, so I used a monochrome 'film' which captured the sombre mood of a mourning city; this was coupled with underlying parallelisms of an angled shot emulating t...
What's the difference between a paper plane and a paper space plane? Altitude! About 125,000 feet to be precise:
Some folks in South Korea seem to think so. Below, recent images from website All Voices reveal a boot camp for naughty Korean children who skip school, join gangs or commit the (somehow equatable) sin of becoming addicted to video games.
Instructables user BrittLiv uses a moldable silicone called sugru to sculpt this awesome doorstop of South Park's miraculously indestructible Kenny McCormick.
From LAist: Areas designated as bike lanes on the USC campus are now unfriendly territory for bike riders, after "Dr. Charlie Lane, associate senior vice president for Career and Protective Services, announced at a bicycle safety forum that the school is enacting a bicycle ban on [...] the two major pedestrian thoroughfares on the USC campus," according to the LADOT Bike Blog.
alright this might be dangerous but fun. it would involve going some place where people get really offended. everyone has a car and some else gets to paint it how every they want. the goal is to get people from the street to attack the car. it would be like going to the south and writing NASCAR is for F**S on the other guys car. but in order to win this game who every can pull over and get the most amount of people to give you directions wins.
African children have been fashioning soccer balls from condoms since condoms became widely distributed by large health education campaigns promoting AIDS awareness. But it is the anticipation of the hype related to the 2010 South African World Cup that inspired this elegant short to be produced.
I personally don't owe him an apology because as soon as the plane left Argentina for South Africa, I was done criticizing and started rooting for the team, regardless of who was in it. Nyeeeh! ;p
Nobody anywhere calls the sport "soccer". But here we are, the only ones in South Africa that do not call it some variation on foot and ball. And of course, if you've pondered this before, you are probably equally befuddled that the game we call football is not even played with one's foot in the first place. American football ought to be called handball...
Words can't express how awesome this is. These South Korean soccer fans make the American sports stadium tradition of "The Wave" look utterly pathetic in comparison. And high school kids, nonetheless! Via YouTube,
Hey now! Brazil, Paraguay, Chile, Argentina and Uruguay are doing very well in their respective groups. The are all expected to qualify to the final 16. In fact, they are doing better than any other continent. Europe's top flight teams are disappointing, as are the host African nations.
Happy Birthday FarmVille!!!!! Adoptable Party Duck
I still have hope that this will be a good World Cup... This article aggregates a lot of things that have been said about the World Cup experience this year (South Africa's infrastructure, low scoring games, uninteresting first round match-ups, etc). I've noticed in a few broadcasts that upper seating areas are not filled to capacity and maybe the vuvuzelas make up for this. I think this will change once the Knock-out stages begin, but Nick Webster has a point:
Or at the least, Sexy Has Been in Lisbon! There are definitely ladies (Kardashians, Hiltons, et al) that have made the journey to South Africa for more than the matches.....
In honor of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, ESPN commissioned the Wieden+Kennedy ad agency (the same group that did the amazing aquarium Nikes) and the AM I Collective (a group of artists based in Cape Town, South Africa) to create 32 murals, depicting each and every team. Very nice work, beautifully done.
Happy UK vs US World Cup Day! Says Metafilter:
