You might already know a little bit about what the National Ignition Facility has been up to lately, or what they could possibly achieve. But last week, even the scientists at the Livermore, California station couldn't predict the awesome power that their humongous laser was capable of. NIF's laser is already the record holder for the world's largest laser, and now it can also claim to be the first ever 2 megajoule ultraviolet laser after it generated nearly 100 times more energy than any oth...
The Afghan Taliban vowed Monday to exact revenge for the killing of 16 civilians, allegedly by an American soldier who went on a house-to-house shooting rampage Sunday in two villages near his base.
THE Pentagon's top two officials have revealed that President Barack Obama had asked for preliminary military options to respond to the Syria conflict but the administration still believed diplomatic and economic pressure was the best way to protect Syrians from the Assad government's repression.
This awesome how to explains the construction of a DIY USB-charged flashlight! The coolest part is that there are no batteries! Two super capacitors hold the charge from the USB and release it to the LED light at the touch of a button!
"Picture Perfect" is a five minute film that won Best Cinematography in the Gainesville 3 Day Film Challenge in January 2012. A Portuguese photographer struggling to reconnect with his artistic passion admires a woman from afar. Made in two days with three Canon 7Ds and various Canon lenses.
This is my second entry for Challenge 3 Its a tree house. It has four rooms and a Balcony. Enjoy!
The man himself has written a nice letter about the chapel that was featured in a little film called Night of the Living Dead back in the 1960s. There's currently a fund-raising drive happening for it... why not kick in a buck or two?
Here's another delicious Byte. Ucha Gobejishvili, a Georgian Security Researcher under the handle of longrifle0x, discovered two cross site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities on the official website of Forbes. He discovered the hole in two different locations on the site, and has already informed the website of the vulnerability.
A very visual description of the Drake Equation, its importance to the SETI program and a thought or two as to what it means.
As you may or may not know, MegaUpload - one of the largest file sharing services has been taken down by the feds.

The Stun-Gun In this article, I'll show you how to make a small, weaponized highlighter. Before I get into how to built this device, let me warn you. This device is harmful! When used, it can cause burns and/or serious muscle spasms. The voltage is potentially deadly! DO NOT attempt to build this device unless you are experienced with safety, electronics, soldering, and understand circuit schematics.
There are two pictures mixed into a double exposure : a long exposure light painting picture of 2012 and a picture taken exactly at 12:00 of someone pouring champagne.
Null Byte is looking for moderators! In today's Null Byte, we're hacking Netflix. As most of you know, Netflix is a subscription service that streams movies and TV shows to your devices over the internet. A common stance amongst my Xbox Live friends is that Netflix isn't worth the cost. The instant movies predominantly consist of old titles, and new movies aren't added often enough.

That's right, by creating a running track, players can run at super speeds! Not only is it the single fastest way to travel, it's easy to build as well. No redstone wires required.
Lots of people are going to be getting the latest iOS devices this holiday season. But what good is a portable device if you don't hack it? Jailbreaking on the latest stock iOS, version 4.3.5, is a bit of a trivial endeavor. Not many people know how to downgrade from this firmware to a firmware that can be jailbroken (pre-iOS 5). If you want the added functionality and the complete control over your device that comes with jailbreaking, then read on.
It's commonly known that Bethesda games, at launch, are usually the most buggy games to ever leave the hands of any developer. Fallout: New Vegas used to delete people's save files, it was that bad. But then there are the fairly harmless ones that make a dude's head spin when he's talking to you, or discovering that the land of Skyrim is actually larger than you think it is.
This week's AON is pretty short, but there are also lots of clouds because it is winter. However, that just makes the few days of open sky way more valuable!
Astronomy World will be posting a weekly blog post that informs fellow observers upcoming interesting events in the sky. These will include:
I used iPhone app Blender to superimpose two shots, both taken in Bali—the clouds, and a famous surf spot (Uluwatu).
Photo made with Doublexpro using two Hipstamatic Prints. I used several more apps to get the end result.
I finally got around to making the pentakis dodecahedron from the instructions in Math Craft admin Cory Poole's blog post. It's not tightened/straightened up yet because I just noticed that I have two black and white and two blue and green compound modules next to each other (but no purple and pink modules next to each other—to the math experts, this is a parity thing, as you can only have even numbers of modules paired up next to each other).
EOS 7D 28-135mm from 30 feet, then cropped. Many sparrows fighting over just two perches at the feeder.
My two cats disturbed by the camera. I can't win, but thought I'd share anyway. I've got a million pics, so I just chose the first good one I came across.
Giveaway Tuesdays has officially ended! But don't sweat it, WonderHowTo has another World that's taken its place. Every Tuesday, Phone Snap! invites you to show off your cell phone photography skills.
This is what happened to my pumpkins, which were carved only two days ago. Somehow they became moldy and began expelling fluid—pumpkin juice—all over the place.
Kim Kardashian got a lot of attention for her Wonder Woman costume. If you want to try to replicate her look this Halloween, this makeup tutorial will show you how to dress up like Kim Kardashian's Wonder Woman. It's like two costumes in one!
Reuben Margolin builds large scale kinetic sculptures based off of mechanical waves. Some of his sculptures contain hundreds of pulleys all working in harmony with each other to create sinusoidal waves and their resulting interference patterns. He designs them all on paper and does all of the complicated trigonometric calculations by hand. Everything is mechanical; there are no electronic controllers.
I built this the other day from the weird gear plans at http://lisaboyer.com/Claytonsite/Claytonsite1.htm
The Netherlands are a hotbed of indie game development, which seems appropriate for such a brilliant and eccentric little nation. Two man Dutch indie developer Vlambeer have found themselves in the news more often than most companies of their size, thanks to two great games and a third on the way.
The NPD Group is a market research firm that issues the most trusted sales numbers for video games. They just released their second quarter 2011 report, and the trends it reveals confirm much of what we here have been speculating here at Indie Games Ichiban (and what we've been hoping for): downloadable games have risen, while full-box retail games have fallen—that is in the US, at least.
DIY Photography has an interesting tutorial on creating a focusing mechanism/lens for around $4. Combine two PVC pipes of different radiuses with a magnifying glass. Cool project.
Took this picture with a Canon Rebel XS from the top of a 30 foot tree- not sure why but it looks like I'm 10 feet up... The scary part is that the wind MPH was 50+, and this wasn't a strong tree. Every few seconds I would be half crushed by this "puny" tree (it was still bigger than me!). She (the dog) kept on trying to hop up in the tree!
An odd game of Scrabble between my two cats. I think they're dyslexic. And chaotic. "I think I found a word."
Now there are times when I just post a video because its cool, but this one here bought tears to my eyes. A mix of the two greatest games? WOOT.
Let's face it, not every logophile is addicted to Scrabble. Without the use of a timer, Scrabble can be a pretty slow game. Even in clubs and tournaments where the standard time limit is 25 minutes per person for a two-player game. Now, take away time restrictions and add two other players and you've got a game that could take up to 2 hours! It all really depends on who the competition is.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution (DX:HR) was the biggest AAA release two weeks ago, which has drawn rave reviews and sold well across the entire world. But if you've actually played the game, then you've seen something annoying that it and many other games share. It happens at the beginning of the game—every time you turn it on.
